PEUGEOT DA40 E 1972 (blanc) [English speaking topic]
My bike, ordered from the other side of my country, arrived yesterday.
I was very excited, because I had only seen it in poor quality photos.
The 7-digit serial number starts with 2, so it was made in 1972.
Fitted with Doumatic 102 and with coaster brake, so it must be a DA40 E model.
The special thing is that my year of manufacture is also 1972
The bike has not been used in the last 20 years and has been stored in a dry basement. Very dirty. Bike has not been cleaned in the last 50 years.
Some paint damages makes it obvious that it was used. Good condition stickers show that it has not been used very much.
The wheels still turn smooth like a Swiss watch.
I don't plan to re-paint it, I plan to restore it to technically nice condition, it will be in daily use in town.
Here is the situation, this is the first part:
SADDLE: the original Reydel saddle is missing, I got it with Selle Royal saddle. I cannot find a Reydel saddle, so I will use a 1974 "Csepel Camping" saddle.
SADDLE BAG: I found a vintage plastic Reydel bag in very nice condition in a local online shop.
REAR LIGTH Typ 91844: the plastic cover is damaged. I either need to repair it or buy one. I don't know what keyword to search for on e-bay.
BELL: I got it with a St Christopher bell, I don't know if it was the original. (I have a 1981 Peugeot mixte bike, it has a Peugeot branded bell on it.)
TRUNK FASTENING BELTS: in the process of using old metal parts with new rubber bands. There is a good chance of success.
TYRES: I would have liked to use Michelin tyres, but there are no importers in Hungary at the moment. I will use 47-406 Schwalbe Road Criuser tires. I would have liked thinner 37-406 or 42-406, 44-406 tires, but there is a shortage of these sizes in our country at the moment.
RIMS: problem with the front RIGIDA CHROLUX, I hear metal dirt running inside. It will be blown out with a high pressure compressor. If it doesn't come out, I'll enlarge one of the holes a bit.
GRIPS: not original. I have a 1975 German made grip, I will use that.
PEDALS: I have vintage looks metal pedals, I'll use them, I like them and they're good to drive, don't slip on the shoe-outsoles with it.
TRUNK PLASTIC PARTS: I have all 4 of them, but I don't know if I'll use them because they are yellowed and hardened. I may look for an alternative.

Re: PEUGEOT DA40 E 1972 (blanc) [English speaking topic]
Salut,

A nice forum member took a photo of the sticker differences. From the stickers you can tell if they are pre-1970 or post-1970.alain2908 a écrit :Salut,

You can find catalogues at http://www.peugeotshow.com/, this will also help you identify them.
It is certain that this series was no longer available in 1974.
This website will help you to identify the production numbers:
https://www.bikeshepherd.org/how-to-ide ... ike-model/
This website has this information:
"Peugeot bike models with six-digit serial numbers were built in the 1960s. Those bikes with seven-digit serial numbers were made in the 1970s, with the first digit telling the year it was manufactured. A good example is a bike with a serial number of 24096758, which indicates that it was manufactured in 1972."

Re: PEUGEOT DA40 E 1972 (blanc) [English speaking topic]
Some people try to determine the year of manufacture of the bike from the age of the hub, but this is not a good idea, because Sachs hubs have often been in storage for 1-2 years before they were used.
This site can be used to identify the production date of Sachs hubs:
https://www.808.dk/?hub-production-date
This is an information page about the DuoMatic models:

This is the Duomatic 102 information page:

L'indication donnée par ce site web n'est valable qu'à partir de 1976.
Avant, cette règle est fausse (par exemple, vous ne trouverez aucun vélo Peugeot avec un numéro à 7 chiffres commençant par un 4).
Par contre, il est vraisemblable que certains vélos numérotés avec un numéro commençant par un 2 datent de 1972 (mais c'est un hasard).

For me, the 1972 vintage is realistic.alain2908 a écrit :Merci.bela01 a écrit : This website will help you to identify the production numbers:

- My Doumatic 102 Hub N marked = made in 1970
- Last production date of the Doumatic 102 serie: 1973
- Based on the Peugeot stickers evolution, the year is 1971-1973
- No year marking on the Rigida rim (it was from 1974, I saw "74" marking on another type of bike)
- if I believe the first digit of the 7-digit chassis number, then it was made in 1972
If you don't believe the 7 digit chassis number, then the bike was made in 1971, 1972 or 1973.
The serial number is 2293302.

I found the 1972 master catalogue:
https://www.bikeboompeugeot.com/Master% ... alogue.htm
Has anyone tried ordering parts with these original serial numbers at a French Peugeot bike shop?

Re: PEUGEOT DA40 E 1972 (blanc) [English speaking topic]
Today was the first day I could ride my bike!
This is what has happened so far:
- got a full and thorough cleaning,
- torpedo 102 hub disassembled and regreased,
- front hub disassembled and regreased,
- new car valve tyre inner tubes (rim valve hole had to be expanded to 8.5mm),
- got new Schwalbe Road Cruiser 47-406 tyres (very quiet running),
- got a new pump,
- new chain,
- got new rear sprockets 20T (very comfortable speed + good climbing),
- original brake bowden cleaned and oiled,
- front wheel with prisms from 1973 (compulsory bike equipment in Hungary),
- handlebar grip from 1975 (exact length).
In progress:
- repair of polishing defects with 2K paint,
- trunk rubberbands + metal hadles,
- rear light repair,
- search for a Peugeot or Reydel saddle,
- bell replacement (I have a Peugeot logo bell from 1981 - but I'm still thinking about it),
- looking for an original removable metal front basket,
- bleaching the yellowed plastic elements of the rear luggage rack,
- greasing the centre shaft (I haven't taken this apart yet, it runs very nicely),
- dynamo internal check (I saw a description of it on the forum).

Re: PEUGEOT DA40 E 1972 (blanc) [English speaking topic]
Unfortunately I received the bike with a broken rear light.
I searched on the internet, the red dome is not uncommon, it was used on several Cibie lights.
I found it second hand from a French seller, but he didn't even bother to reply to my letter.
In my used bike parts box I found a lamp with a very similar shape.
I have a very nice handyman friend, who helped me put the 2 lights parts together.
In the end the operation was successful, only someone who knows the lamp or looks at it very closely can see the difference.

Re: PEUGEOT DA40 E 1972 (blanc) [English speaking topic]
Almost ready.
- I won't do the factory rubber band package clamping, because no one will do the nice bending of the metal hooks (I am soooo sad),
- I found a nice rubber band for the front boot,
- I'll soon put a big basket for the dogs on the rear boot,
- and I'm looking for some nice rear side bags (hard to find items).

The wooden baskets look good, but unfortunately they are not strong.
Strong versions are already being made...
